Canada Launches New Feminist International Assistance Policy

June 9, 2017 – Today, Global Affairs Canada unveiled Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy.

The announcement took place at 9 AM (EST) this morning and a media release can be found here as well as a video.

BCCIC will be preparing a deeper analysis of the new policy to share with you soon that compares our network’s submission to the public consultations, but for now, highlights include:

Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance will apply a human rights approach in promoting six interlinked areas for action:

  • Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls
  • Human dignity
  • Growth that works for everyone
  • Environment and climate action
  • Inclusive governance
  • Peace and security

A new initiative, the Women’s Voice and Leadership Program will be launched in which the Government of Canada will allocate $150 million over five years to respond to the needs of local women’s organizations in developing countries that are working to advance the rights of women and girls and promote gender equality.
