BCCIC CAPACITY-DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP SERIES: Applying Gender-Based Analysis + – 2 Part Series

The training is for members who may have varying levels of awareness and knowledge of the concepts of GBA+ and intersectionality, and gender-responsive and gender-transformative programming.  These concepts will be applied to the work of civil society or other organizations working on international cooperation projects , such as: project design, GAC proposal writing, Theory of Change, monitoring and evaluation, and communication strategies.  Because ideally gender should be mainstreamed throughout the work and operations of an organization, this training is meant for anyone in an organization who works on grants, project implementation, and project monitoring and evaluation.

 The training will be geared towards members who work in a civil society organization, or small and medium-sized organization, but is open to all BCCIC individual, affiliate or organizational members. Participants should be able to attend both sessions.


Global Affairs Canada and other donors are asking organizations to devise and implement development projects that are inclusive, innovative, gender-responsive and even gender-transformative.  Organizations are also being asked to apply an intersectional gender and diversity lens to their work.  What do these concepts mean, and how can they be concretely applied to the project cycle?  This workshop aims to demystify these concepts, and to give organizational staff tangible tools and the confidence to apply these concepts to their everyday work. 


The training is delivered as a series with an ongoing assignment (not standalone sessions).  It is important for members to plan to participate in both virtual sessions, as well as being able to carry out the individual work component before and between both sessions.  This format is designed in order to ensure that participants learn concrete skills and are able to apply tools and methods to their own work.  In this way, this workshop gets past the common problem of learning concepts but not knowing what to do with them.

 The different components of this workshop series are as follows:

1. Pre-Session 1 Activity (October 28, 2020)

Think about a piece of work that you have done recently, are currently doing, or that you will soon be starting at your CSO/SMO, which requires you to mainstream gender, use an intersectional gender and diversity lens, or apply the concepts of gender-responsiveness or gender-transformation.  Some examples include: a project proposal (already written or in the process of being written), a communications piece which discusses project impacts and outcomes, a project’s theory of change, a gender analysis, background contextual research for a project, a project evaluation, a stakeholder consultation, a policy brief, a data collection methodology, or a data analysis.  

Be sure to select a piece of work that you would most like to receive inputs and mentoring on with the objective of better integrating gender.  Note that your piece of work will remain confidential throughout the workshop.  Email the Facilitator to let her know what piece of work you will be bringing to Session 1 by October 28, 2020.

For members who do not have a piece of work to bring to the first session, please contact the Facilitator by Oct. 28th.  The Facilitator can prepare a case study or piece of work for you to work on between Session 1 and 2.

2. Attend Session 1 (virtual), Wednesday, November 4, 2020, 9am -12pm

There will be a refreshing and demystifying of the meanings of the concepts of GBA+, intersectionality, gender-responsiveness, and gender-transformation.  There will also be a detailed discussion on how to apply these concepts to the work of CSOs/SMOs throughout the project cycle.  Participants will then be grouped into break-out groups based on the type of work they have brought to work on following session 1 to discuss their individual work to be completed before the start of Session 2.

3. Mid-point Check in with Facilitator on your individual work (week of November 9-13)

Participants are able to organize a mid-point check-in with the Facilitator (virtual), or by email, to discuss your individual work assignment based on the piece of work you brought to Session 1 (or that you were given to work on by the Facilitator).  Think of this as an opportunity for mentoring and coaching to get past any stumbling blocks, or to ask questions.

4. Attend Session 2 (virtual), Friday, November 20, 2020, 9am-12pm

We will discuss the challenges and successes of individual work assignments, as well as key common stumbling blocks and ways forward for integrating an intersectional gender and diversity lens.  Breakout rooms will be used for peer-to-peer learning.  Participants will be provided with additional tips and concrete tools to be applied to their work.  

* Participants who attended both sessions will receive a certificate of completion for this workshop.

Pre-Session 1 Activity – October 28, 2020 (with some flexibility)

Session 1 – Wednesday, November 4, 2020, 9am-12pm (virtual)

Individual Work Component and Mid-point Check in – you will be working on integrating gender into your individual work piece from November 5-19, and you will also be able to have a check-in session with the Facilitator in the week of November 9-13 (virtual or email).

Session 2 – Friday November 20, 2020, 9am-12pm (virtual)


GBA+: an analytical process used to assess how diverse groups of women, men and non-binary people may experience policies, programs, and initiatives. The “plus” acknowledges that GBA goes beyond biological (sex) and socio-cultural (gender) differences, to also recognize multiple identity factors such as race, ethnicity, religion, age, and mental or physical disability.

Intersectionality: seeing gender equality in relation to other social categories such as race, class, disability, sexual orientation, and age.

Gender-Responsive: recognising and addressing differences in the roles, rights, and responsibilities of men/boys and women/girls to ensure that they benefit equally

Gender-Transformative: tackling the root causes of gender inequalities, addressing the social norms, values, and beliefs that can lead to gender inequalities, and addressing the power relations between women/girls and men/boys for greater gender equality. 

About the Facilitator – Dr. Geetanjali Gill

Geetanjali is an independent development consultant and practitioner based in Vancouver, with more than 15 years of experience working in the gender and development sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, UK, and Canada.  Most recently, she has been assisting development NGOs based in Canada (e.g. Right to Play International, Aga Khan Foundation Canada, and Canadian Foodgrains Bank), to apply GBA+ and intersectionality to their work, as well as helping them to design and implement gender-responsive and gender-transformative projects for GAC (GE-2 and GE-3).  She has also been an Independent Expert Reviewer for the Fund for Innovation and Transformation (FIT)/Manitoba Council for International Cooperation. 

Geetanjali is also an Assistant Professor in Global Development Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley in BC, and an individual member of BCCIC.  She holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Sussex (UK), a MSc in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), and a BA in International Development Studies from the University of Toronto.
