BCCIC Webinar – Organizational Gender Strategy Development (March 31, 2020)

Join us on March 31st from 11am to 12:30pm (PDT) for a webinar on how to develop a gender strategy. With the launch of Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP) in 2017, the Canadian Government and Global Affairs Canada (GAC) signalled their commitment to placing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls at the heart of international cooperation. For international nonprofits seeking to work with GAC it is essential to know how to develop an organizational gender strategy. This webinar will be divided into three parts:
Dr. Zosa De Sas Kropiwnicki-Gruber, the BCCIC Senior Policy Analyst and Gender Specialist, will provide a brief introduction to gender strategy development by highlighting the innovative ways in which BCCIC members have considered interlinkages in relation to women’s equality, gender empowerment and the Sustainable Development Goals. CIRDI’s Gender Strategy
Amar Nijhawan and Dr. Priya Bala-Miller, from the Canadian International Resources Development Institute (CIRDI) will discuss best practices and methods in developing a gender strategy, drawn from their own experience releasing a institutional gender strategy focused on natural resource governance. This includes examining existing work and project portfolios from a gender-impact lens, identifying priority intervention spaces, and mapping against global best practices. CIRDI will also discuss the processes behind convening consultative sessions and peer-reviews with a wide range of global actors including civil society, academia, government, community groups, international development donors, and industry.
Presentation by CUSO International
Sarah Pentlow, of CUSO International, will discuss how Cuso redesigned its strategic plan to give greater priority to Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) programming in line with the Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP). She will also describe the process by which Cuso adapted its projects to ensure that GESI objectives were integrated across all program areas to reflect a gender-transformative approach to development. In particular, she will highlight the shift of GESI objectives to three pillars of gender development, namely empowerment, equity, and enabling environments.

Dr. Zosa De Sas Kropiwnicki-Gruber is a Senior Policy Analyst and Gender Specialist at BCCIC. She has a doctorate in International Development Studies from the University of Oxford, as well as two Masters degrees in Political Science and Social Policy from Leeds University and Rhodes University, respectively. Zosa has accrued 15 years of experience in research, evaluation, and policy analysis in developing, transitional, and emergency contexts in South East Europe, Central Asia, West Africa, and Southern Africa. Zosa has worked for a wide range of government, non-government, and international non-governmental organizations such as UNICEF, UNDP, UNODC, IOM, Save the Children, Family for Every Child, and others. Her work has centred on human rights, empowerment, and social justice in the child protection, gender, and equity sectors.
In her current capacity at CIRDI as the Director of Partnerships and Program Development, Dr. Bala-Miller leads on the strategic development of new programming, donor and partner relations, as well as the Institute’s gender strategy and implementation plan for a global portfolio of projects spanning 20 countries. Dr. Bala-Miller has over 16 years of professional experience in sustainable development with specialist expertise on issues related to gender equality, human rights and sustainable finance. She previously worked with international non-government organizations, UN Agencies and institutional investors, where she led multi-stakeholder global research and capacity building programmes on these sustainability issues. In these roles, she represented stakeholder concerns in global forums such as the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, The UN-led Marrakech Process for a 10-Year Framework of Programs (10YFP) on Sustainable Consumption and Production, the OECD’s Working Party of the Trade Committee, the European Commission and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (UN-PRI). She held the 2015 Jesse and Besty Fink Foundation Research Fellowship at the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and is an alumnus of the OIKOS/UN-PRI Young Scholars Finance Academy.
Amar Nijhawan is a Program Manager and Gender Equality Lead at the Canadian International Resources Development Institute (CIRDI), an independent center of expertise in natural resource-led development based at the University of British Columbia. Prior to joining CIRDI, Amar worked at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and led an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation initiative that focused on innovation policy and entrepreneurship in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Peru. Amar has also worked in the nonprofit world in India, specifically with homeless communities and women survivors of state violence in New Delhi. Amar holds a MSc from the Gender Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a B.A in Political Science and International Development Studies from McGill University.
Sarah Pentlow has worked in the non-profit sector for over 20 years, with the last 16 focussed in international development. She has worked on issues ranging from youth programming, volunteer co-operation, theatre for development and gender equality. Since 2017 she has supported Cuso International as the Global Lead for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion, working with 17 different country programs In Africa, Asia and Latin America providing technical support on gender equality programming. She completed her Master’s degree in Development Management in 2016, focussing her research on Women’s Economic Empowerment in Myanmar. She is passionate about motivating people and sharing knowledge to promote social justice and reduce inequality in the world and enjoys blogging on these topics. She is currently based in the UK.
