IDW 2020 Webinar – Insider perspectives from COP25
February 4 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Insider perspectives from COP25: what happened, how to move forward, and why systemic climate action is critical for sustainable development
In December, the BC Council for International Cooperation sent an all-youth delegation to the UN Climate Conference (COP25) in Madrid. They advocated for bold climate action to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree warming target, and raised their voices on behalf systemically disadvantaged groups within Canada and around the world. Two advance both of these aims, the delegation has published a brief for Canadian policy makers outlining recommendations for a revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement. The brief identifies inextricable linkages between the climate crisis and other aspects of human society such as Indigenous and human rights, intergenerational equity, energy, food systems, natural ecosystems, climate finance, and health.
The webinar will be facilitated by the COP25 youth delegates. They will debrief their experiences at the conference, outlining major conceptual themes within the international climate diplomacy discourse. Overall, the aim of the webinar is to foster an understanding that sustainable development cannot be achieved without solving the climate crisis.
