National Youth Debate: Leadership for a Sustainable Future
June 4 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The National Youth Debate: Leadership for a Sustainable Future is a federal pre-election debate on the political leadership required for a sustainable and prosperous Canada, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as an orienting framework. The youth debate provides a unique and innovative opportunity in electoral engagement by giving young political leaders centre stage to offer their own perspectives on their party’s vision in contributing to a better Canada and a better world. The event provides political leaders the opportunity to listen and reflect on what youth in their own party are advocating. Using the Sustainable Development Goals as a framework allows a broader vision to be communicated and to set the stage for more targeted and specific political debates that will taking place during the 2019 election campaign.
Youth make up a quarter of Canada’s population and Millenials are the largest generation in the country. Their votes will decide the outcome of this year’s federal election. Canada’s youth are also inheriting a range of national and global challenges that could see their quality of life soon decline including climate change, growing inequality, and a lack of good jobs. At the same time, Canada already has an ambitious vision for ending poverty, protecting the environment, and ensuring national prosperity – the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were signed onto by the Conservatives and continued under the Liberal government, and this non-partisan agenda provides targets and timelines for dealing with the biggest national and global challenges facing youth and all generations in Canada. The question is how do we get there? This is the central question underlying the National Youth Debate: Leadership for a Sustainable Canada.
In the National Youth Debate, youth representatives of Canada’s major political parties will engage in dialogue on the biggest vision and biggest questions facing Canada with party leaders in attendance as guest listeners and commentators. Questions will be taken and curated from across the country and party leaders will be invited to attend as esteemed guest listeners to offer their reflections and commentary at the end.
