Gender & Equity Volunteer Position

As a network of over 100 members, the BC Council for International Cooperation seeks to provide opportunities for British Columbians to engage with global issues and get a taste of what it’s like to be part of the civil society sector. With 17 Sustainable Development Goals to tackle locally and globally by 2030, there is much to be done – get involved today!

Description & Context: 

On a day to day basis you would be working closely with the Senior Policy Advisor & Gender Specialist in undertaking research and policy analysis related to gender equality, equity and empowerment. The research that you undertake will become an important evidence-base for policy and programming. You will conduct research on the content and implementation of international, federal and provincial policies related to gender equality. You will also support an institutional assessment on gender equality in the development sector, which will include both primary and secondary research. You will also conduct research and policy analysis on the SDGs through the lens of equity and identify success stories and promising practices related to gender equality and empowerment. 

Possible Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Identifying, summarizing and collating relevant background documents, secondary literature and policies.
  • Analyzing policy documents and secondary literature. 
  • Participating in training related to the research instruments and ethical protocol. 
  • Conducting face-to-face or telephonic interviews with stakeholders and members.
  • Developing case studies on success stories and promising practices.
  • Analyzing survey results (basic quantitative skills would be an asset).
  • Analyzing qualitative data using a Gender+ analytical framework. 
  • Preparing draft reports and executive summaries, and supporting the Senior Policy Advisor & Gender Specialist in the completion of reports and policy briefs.
  • Assisting in the preparation and delivery of presentations and capacity building interventions;
  • Attending regular meetings with the Senior Policy Advisor & Gender Specialist.
  • Attending workshops, seminars and Webinars related to gender equality.

  • A good understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • A passion for gender equality and empowerment;
  • A strong desire to promote the equitable inclusion of vulnerable and marginalized people;
  • An understanding of the following concepts: gender; intersectionality; equity; empowerment.
  • An ability to reflect on notions of power and identity;
  • Experience conducting secondary research;
  • Basic experience conducting primary research;
  • Qualitative analysis skills;
  • Basic quantitative skills would be an asset but are not a requirement;
  • Good writing and referencing skills;
  • A commitment to confidentiality and the handling of potentially sensitive data;
  • Essential person requirements include: timeliness, commitment, reliability; resourcefulness, some degree of independence; flexibility; critical thinking, and being able to communicate effectively. 
  • A respect for diversity and inclusion is essential.

Volunteering with BCCIC is an unpaid experience for which no monetary compensation is provided. Understanding and appreciating those who volunteer with us are seeking to gain experience and contribute to moving toward a better world, BCCIC staff work with each of our volunteers to make the experience of volunteering with us as meaningful as possible. Our volunteers set their own schedules and decide collaboratively with a BCCIC staff member as to the tasks they wish to perform.

In your time us, you can expect:

  • Free membership to BCCIC during the time that volunteering is taking place;
  • Free attendance to events organized by BCCIC for its members while volunteering with BCCIC;
  • Opportunity to build one’s skills and CV as part of the BCCIC team;
  • Opportunity to learn more about the international development context in BC as part of a provincial network

Duration: 

The duration of this positions is 3 months with the possibility of extension and a time commitment of 8-14 hours a week. Volunteering with BCCIC is flexible, but to reduce volunteer turnover we hope for volunteers to stay with us for 3 months. Exceptions are made for projects with quick turnaround times. Please do include the time commitment you are able to make within the body of your statement of interest. 

Orientation:

All BCCIC volunteers have a one-day orientation session to better understand the organization and what it means to be a volunteer with us.
