Vancouver, BC – June 9, 2020 — The British Columbia Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) today announces the release of its new report, Reading Between the Lines: Accelerated Implementation of Agenda 2030.
Since 2015, BCCIC has produced detailed national reports in advance of the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF). This year’s BCCIC 2020 spotlight report speaks to the broad theme of “accelerated action and transformative pathways” towards achieving Agenda 2030.
The COVID-19 global pandemic altered the breadth and focus of this year’s report, and an entire chapter has been devoted to Canada’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the context of Agenda 2030. Detailing the challenges of COVID-19 and the policies implemented to address these challenges, the report then calls for ‘systems’ thinking and inter-sectoral action in the context of crises of this scale.
“The United Nations has called on countries like Canada to accelerate action on the SDGs,” says Michael Simpson, the Executive Director of BCCIC. “COVID-19 has underlined the connections between global health, climate change, food security, poverty and all seventeen international goals of Agenda 2030. Our report also examines Canada’s performance in the midst of this crisis.”
More broadly, the report reflects on Canada’s progress on interlinkages and the 2030 Agenda, and it describes how interlinkages have been understood and utilized by policymakers and practitioners in different sectors and at varying scales across the country.
“Our previous reports examine Canada’s performance on each of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were being reviewed by the United Nations in a given year. They were each a report card of sorts, examining how Canada is doing from a civil society perspective,” explains Dr. Zosa Gruber, the report’s editor and Senior Policy Analyst at BCCIC. “This year’s report deviates from this previous structure to examine some of the underlying principles behind Canada’s SDG performance.”
The report offers concrete examples of transformative principles in action. Each of the seven chapters was researched and written by subject matter experts from across Canada.
